Omaha Hi-Lo

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8-or-Better) is a variant similar to Omaha Hi, except that the pot during battle is split evenly between the highest and lowest ranked 5 card poker hands. Different combinations of hole cards can be used to make high and low cards. However, it should be noted that certain conditions must be met in order for the “low” half of the pot to be awarded. This area is where the “8 or better” part of the name comes into play, where the five cards that make up the “low” hand must be ranked 8 or lower. Also, it should be noted that straights and flushes do not count against hands in this variant. The lowest possible hand is the A-2-3-4-5 combination while the highest “low” qualifying hand is 8-7-6-5-4. Note that the lowest hands are ranked from the highest card down. (i.e. 6-5-4-3-2 would be better than 8-4-3-2-A for the bottom of the pot.)

7-Card Stud

Prior to the emergence of Texas Hold’em which soared to the forefront of poker popularity, Stud poker used to hold the ground as the most common form of poker. Much different from the aforementioned types of games (which use hole cards and community cards for players to make the best hand), each player in Stud ultimately receives their own card. Some of these cards in one hand will be face down and hidden from the player, while other cards will be face up for other opponents to see.

2-7 Triple Draw

This interesting form of poker has all players dealing 5 cards each (which no other player can see in any capacity, i.e. there will be no exposed or exposed cards). In this form of low ball poker, players have not one, but three draws to try and make the best “low” hand. Unlike some other forms of “low” poker, it is important to note that straights and flushes do not count towards making a low hand. Also, note that Aces are always high in this game. As such, this makes the best hand in the game 7-5-4-3-2. This also means that a hand like A-2-3-4-5 isn’t straight, it’s an Ace high.

5-Card Omaha

If you love the thrill of being able to make strong hands effortlessly in Omaha Hi, be sure to check out the action that 5 card Omaha brings to the felts! Instead of being dealt 4 hole cards, each player receives 5 to start each hand. However, players must use exactly 2 of their hole cards and 3 community cards to try and make the best hand. But, because they have one hole card dealt to them than in regular Omaha, there are now more possibilities for making stronger hands! This game is usually played in a pot-limit format, but may also be found, from time to time, as a no-limit game.

5-Card Draw

In this form of draw poker, players want to make the highest-ranking 5-card poker hand. To begin with, all players are dealt their own separate hands, which remain hidden from other players. This factor makes for an interesting dynamic, as you can try to make a strong hand yourself. However, you don’t know how it will apply to other players.

Badugi

This poker variant belongs to the “tie” and “Low Ball” poker families. However, Badugi is quite unique compared to other poker games because of the hand ranking system it uses to determine the best cards. As such, being proficient in other forms of poker doesn’t always cross easily when it comes to understanding Badugi.

Razz

Razz is a form of Stud Poker where players try to make the lowest possible hand. In the ranking system for this game, straights and flushes don’t count as low hands. Also, Aces are counted as low as possible in this game, which means the lowest/best hand is A-2-3-4-5.

Short Deck

Short deck is a very fun variant of Hold’em that has become a staple in high stakes cash games and tournament series in recent years. The hand rankings in this poker game are slightly different than in traditional games (with the flush now beating the full house), and for good reason: 2 through 5 have been removed from the deck! Therefore, the game is played with only 36 playing cards (hence the name). With fewer cards, players have a better chance of making some sort of artificial hand but should also be aware that this applies to the strength of their opponent’s hand as well! With fewer cards, there comes a higher variance and the possibility of making stronger hands more often.
